Frequently asked questions

Is a high Texas Ratio a sign a bank will fail?

A high Texas Ratio means problem assets are large relative to the capital and reserves that would absorb them, and historically very high ratios have flagged banks under stress. But it is not a prediction of failure: classification of 'nonperforming' assets varies (some are government-guaranteed or well-collateralised), the ratio uses one quarterly snapshot, and large banks with high ratios may still be well capitalised. Read it alongside capital ratios and earnings, not in isolation.

Are my deposits at risk if my bank has a high Texas Ratio?

Your insured deposits are protected by the FDIC up to $250,000 per depositor, per bank, per ownership category no matter what a bank's Texas Ratio is. The ratio describes balance-sheet stress, not whether your covered money is safe. If you hold more than the limit at one bank, use the coverage calculator to structure accounts so all of it is insured.
